Origin: La bandera is the Mexican way of serving tequila: three small glasses in the colours of the national flag. Green is lime juice, white is tequila blanco, red is sangrita made from tomato, orange and chilli. Sangrita comes from Jalisco, the home state of tequila, where it was originally made from leftover fruit.
Setup: Three small glasses per person, filled with lime juice, tequila and sangrita. The alcohol free version works with lime, chilled herbal tea and tomato juice.
How to play:
- The glasses sit in front of everyone in the order green, white, red
- Nothing is downed, you alternate in small sips
- A caller sets the order and changes it after every round
- Take the wrong colour and you start the round again
Drinking:
- Wrong colour: the green glass once more
- Salt or lemon on the side: strict tables count that as a mistake
- Leave the sangrita untouched and you miss the point, plus one extra sip
Culture: In Mexico good tequila is never shot. Downing it mostly shows that you do not want to taste it.
