How to play

Origin: The boat race is a British university tradition named after the Oxford and Cambridge rowing regatta. Sports clubs and college bars have run it as a team contest for decades.

Setup: Two teams of equal size line up facing each other. Everyone has an equally full glass in front of them.

How to play:

  1. On the signal the first player of each team drains their glass
  2. The empty glass goes upside down on their head before the next player may start
  3. Starting early means starting that glass again
  4. The team whose last player finishes first wins

Drinking: The losing team drinks a penalty round together, traditionally half a glass each.

Fairness: Same glasses, same fill, one neutral referee. Anything else ends in an argument.
