Origin: The crate run grew out of German student towns and has been run as a mass event with hundreds of teams in Aachen, Münster or Marburg since the 1990s. Rule number one is the same everywhere: the crate has to arrive empty.
Setup: Teams of two, one crate of beer per team, a route of roughly three to five kilometres with a start and a finish.
How to play:
- The crate is carried together, never pushed or rolled
- Drinking happens on the way, breaks are allowed
- Empty bottles stay in the crate and cross the finish line with you
- The clock runs from the start until the crate is empty at the finish
Drinking: One crate per team, split evenly. Anyone who cannot finish their share takes a time penalty instead of being forced.
Responsibility: Stay off roads with traffic, take the empties with you, bring water. A six pack works just as well as a full crate.
