Quaich

Origin: The quaich, from the Gaelic cuach for cup, is the Scottish friendship vessel. The two handles have a purpose: holding it with both hands means you cannot draw a weapon, and the host drinks first to prove nothing is poisoned. Highland weddings and new year still use it.

Setup: One shallow two handled vessel, or a bowl instead, filled with whisky, cider or something alcohol free.

How to play:

1. The host lifts the quaich with both hands and drinks first
2. They pass it to their neighbour and say one sentence about why they are glad that person is here
3. The next person drinks, gives thanks and passes it on
4. The cup is never held with one hand

Drinking:

• One sip each, no more
• Hold it one handed and you drink again
• Nothing to say means two sips and you start the next round

Occasion: First round of the night or the last one before leaving. Both are traditional.
