How to play

Origin: In Vietnamese bia hoi bars nobody drinks alone. The call một, hai, ba, dô (one, two, three, go) synchronises the whole table, often every few minutes. Announcing the share is part of it: trăm phần trăm means one hundred percent, so empty the glass, năm mươi phần trăm is fifty percent.

Setup: Glasses with ice, as they do it there, and one caller.

How to play:

  1. The caller announces the amount, one hundred or fifty percent
  2. Then counts: mot, hai, ba
  3. Everyone shouts do together and drinks the announced share
  4. Then each person puts the glass down audibly, the sign for a refill

Drinking:

  • Drink before the call and you drink that round twice
  • Sneak a sip between calls and you buy the next round
  • Drink too little and your neighbour checks and tops you up

Courtesy: Anyone sitting one out raises the glass without drinking. They still took part, and that is what counts.
